"The Case of the Chemical Syndicate"

Say what you will about Batman in whatever form you prefer, they all have their start from this first issue. "The Bat-Man" as he was referred to throughout the story has a weird looking cowl, doesn't speak until the end as he explains how he worked things out, and is already established as a vigilante who is wanted by Commissioner Gordon and his police force.

In talking with some about the issue, some say the story makes no sense. While there are some weird moments, such as a henchman who appears to be trying to kill all four business partners in a chemical company, but then we learn, without explanation that he works on orders from one of the four, the story is pretty straightforward.

The only recognizable elements for longtime Batman fans are Bruce Wayne, Gordon, and of course, even with the weird cowl, Batman. He drives a red car and he is very cold as the murderer falls into an acid pit. He is clever though as he rescues one of the four from being gassed in a giant glass tank by plugging up the vent and then breaking the glass.

Maybe it's over 80 years of Batman, but I didn't feel like the reveal of Bruce to the readers as Batman at the end of the story was that surprising. But one thing is for certain, Batman certainly wasn't Superman and he stood out among costumed adventurers with no powers but certain skills sets of the time. Stay tuned, Citizens!
