This is a real simplistic story and a disappointing one actually. Based on the cover, I thought we were getting the return of the Cavalier, a villain I have enjoyed in the past, but instead Bruce and Dick visit Professor Carter Nichols who once again hypnotizes the two, sending them back to the time of The Three Muskateers.
They are there as D'Artangnian meets the Three as their enemy at first, but with Batman spilling the beans, based on his knowledge of reading the book, he almost gets himself arrested for witchcraft. When the king's guards turn on the Muskateers, it's up to D'Artangnian, Batman and Robin to set things right.
D'Artangnian is injured and Batman must take his place where he rescues a lady in waiting and gives the story a happy ending rather than the tragic one everyone knows. The story is perfect for the time as The Three Muskateers was required reading for many a young man back then. Today though, it falls flat.
What's next? Stay tuned, Citizens, as we look at Detective Comics #106 and the story, "The Phantom of the Library." This one sounds really interesting. I used to work for New York Public Library and the idea of a killer ex-librarian is intriguing.
