"In the Soup"

Poor Alfred. When you look at how he's portrayed today, he's come a long way from where he was the butt of the joke as the story opens with Bruce sending him off to help a friend with a special project - walking her dog. And he leaves the Wayne household with Bruce warning him not to accidentally solve and crimes, leaving something for Batman to do.

As he walks the dog, he passes a nearby soup factory (Sambell's) that is being robbed of its precious turtle soup. (I have never seen turtle soup being canned as a store bought item.) The crooks get away and Alfred deduces that the rival company is responsbile, but how does one prove it without any evidence? You convince the police that the dog who smelled the food in the soup factory and is hungry will lead them to the culprit. And that's exactly what he does, thanks to Alfred dragging a sausage along the ground to draw the dog and the police to the rival company's factory.

Sadly, despite his success, Alfred is still ridiculed by Bruce and Dick who find it doubtful that he actually deduced what was wrong rather than stumbling upon it. We'll wrap up this anthology tomorrow, Citizens!
