Batman #26 - Story 3

October 11, 1944

"The Year 3000!"

The opening of this story says this isn't a Batman and Robin story, but rather about the people of the future, presumably affected by their actions. It's the story of a future that seems at peace as the worlds in the solar system sport all kinds of life. And then one day, the inhabitants of Saturn, bug looking creatures, attack the Earth and take it over. They impose martial law.

Two Earthlings, Brane and Ricky, discover a time capsule from the World's Fair of 1939 among the ruins. They learn of the American Revolution and Brane tries to rally his fellow Earthlings, but they are fearful of the aliens from Saturn. They then discover the films of Batman and Robin. With this, they decide to take on the mantle to fight against their oppressors.

What follows is a story of Batman rallying the people of Earth to fight back and then taking the fight to Saturn. We learn that Brane is a decedent of Bruce. It's a cute little science fiction piece, but I honestly didn't spend a lot of time reading it as I'm not about "possible" future stories in general and frankly, I think it's a little premature to be featuring them so early in the comics' run. Perhaps this will be referenced in a future story, in which case, I'll go back and give this another read

So what's next? We'll finish up our look at this anthology issue, Citizens!
